Starring: Emile Hirsch, Elisha Cuthbert, Timothy Olyphant, James Remar, Chris Marquette, Paul Dano, Olivia WildePlot: Before graduating, Matthew finds someone special, and she lives right next door.Trivia: You may know the school mascot in the movie, it's the same mascot in 2003's Old School, ALSO starring Cuthbert. There's other trivia, but it's not really important or fun.Review: This movie certainly brings back a whole bunch of memories. I wasn't exactly the most popular kid in high school, similar to Matthew, but I also wasn't smart... it's a tough call really. But I always loved the idea of something like this happening in my life. Meet that one girl who takes your breath away and at the same time breathes new life into you, sounds literally magical. Doesn't hurt that the woman in this is Elisha Cuthbert, who has been a crush of mine for years. Straight up, this woman is gorgeous in every way. Watch her in Happy Endings as well, a three season tv show that's like Friends but waaaaaaay better.I love everything about this movie, it gives the perfect high school vibe without being that douchey high school movie that we all think high school was. It differs from breakfast Club, Varsity Blues, Pretty in Pink and so many others because, while it's about the guy who gets the girl, it's really about a boy changing and growing into a man, which is something that isn't easy to do in movies that are romantic comedies as well as dramas.Emile Hirsch in one of his first movies is fantastic, I love him as an actor and think he deserves to be in so much more. He's a strong actor, who's passionate, smart, handsome and, sadly for us all, picks movies that he wants to do, not movies that will make him a lot of money. He was in a movie we did a podcast on, The Darkest Hour, he does super well in it as well. Elisha Cuthbert is a breakout star in this and while she was in a very popular tv show in 24, this, for me, is her pinnacle. Timothy Olyphant plays the greasiest, sleaziest human being on Earth, maximizing his worth as a piece of crap by being a producer for pornographic movies. Not that i have an issue with anyone who would do that, I'm sure they're all great people, but he plays it up and is greasy about it a lot. James Remar also plays a producer, but is very much so a business man in the movie and does really well with it. Seeing Chris Marquette in something other than Fan Boys is interesting, I don't think very much of him as an actor, but that's just because I don't see him in anything, he does fine, but is just... there. Then we have Paul Dano, of Love & Mercy fame (if you don't know what that is, watch it), so far back into his shell you can barely tell it's him. Phenomenal. The music is done really well also, a lot of really good, but not over the top high school ballads that really time warp a guy back to 2000 when he started high school. A lot of the original scores and mixing we done by Paul Haslinger, of Tangerine Dream fame, they were a pretty cool German electronic band in the mid 80's.I can't rave enough about this movie, I just love it from start to finish, the comedy, the drama, acting by young actors and actresses at the time is also done very well.I could write about this movie so much more, but I want you to enjoy it like I enjoy it, not have it talked about by some dude in his living room. I don't want to spoil anything, I want you to watch it. Watch it and remember or think about what you would do if you found that person, that one person who could change your life in a day and what you'd do to keep them. Sorry to get all emotional and stuff on you, I just love this movie so much!
