Starring: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Jake JohnsonPlot: in 2017, a group of treasure hunters finds the crypt of a mummy from over 2,000 years ago that was wiped from the history books... but why?Runtime: 1h50mReview: I want to make three things known before i dive into this review: 1.) I LOVED the Brendan Fraser Mummy from 1999, one of my favourite movies. 2.) I am super stoked for this "Dark Universe" that Universal is doing with their movies. A series of movies about classic movie monsters give me the biggest nerd boner in existence. And 3.) As always, there are likely to be spoilers. So I went into this movie with not the highest of hopes because I heard it didn't do well in North America, not a lot of people enjoyed it and that it wasn't scary. All three of those things made me not excited, but I still wanted to see where it was taken.I was actually pretty happy with the movie, I felt that Tom Cruise was a bold choice for a Monster movie, but then thought about it for a minute and changed my opinion. There was always a classic handsome hero in the old movies, why not stay the course with the tradition. Maybe I was just confused that it was Tom Cruise and not someone else. Not that I dislike Tom Cruise, I find him to be an amazing actor, but doesn't seem quite his jam lately. I enjoy Sofia Boutella despite having only seen her in The Kingsmen, but she did a good job as knife legs. If you listen to our podcast you will know that I am a moron and thought she actually had knife legs as a person and was quickly made fun of by my co-hosts. I also genuinely love Russell Crowe, I think he's a great actor and I'm glad to see him back in bigger movies. Annabelle Wallis I am 100% indifferent to as I don't know who she is and felt her role of semi damsel in distress/semi strong, independent woman was confusing, but fine.It starts off with a back story about an Egyptian woman who would become ruler if it weren't for her jackass little brother being born. So she does what every person in her time would do, make a deal with the "evil" god Set and kills her family. She makes a deal with Set to release him into the human world, but gets caught before she can do it. So she then gets mummified alive and buried forever... or so they thought! We then have Tom Cruise and Jake Johnson as army men who go all Three Kings and try to hunt for treasure to sell on the black market. They find more than they bargained for, because they find a mummy who wants to kill everyone and rule the world. Pretty basic storyline and I was glad they didn't try to fancy it up at all. They DID try to tie in Russell Crowe to the series as Doctor Jekyll, spoiler, he plays Mister Hyde too, but he was the head of a secret society trying to hunt down, examine and destroy evil. Not the best thing I've ever heard, but not awful. I thought he was good as doctor Jekyll, but his single scene as mister Hyde was immaculate. He went full cockney accent and you don't really notice until they fight, but he really does make Tom Cruise look child sized, even more than he is.The movie was really beautiful as expected because it's millions of dollars worth of effects and was filmed in Oxford.I couldn't tell you a single thing about the music, it was a non factor in the movie.I think the biggest problem I have with the movie is that it physically felt rushed. I would say that the movie takes place in a matter of 96 hours? Which isn't a bad thing, but I think it could have been stretched out to a couple weeks and we could have seen some cooler things with the movie, seeing the 10 plagues of Egypt with the money we have today would have been cool. But other than that I enjoyed it, not nearly as much as Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, but still enjoyed it.Before anyone goes to see it I would let them know ahead of time that it's not a horror movie at all. It's at best an action-horror, but even that seems false to me. There are a couple jumps scares as it is a monster movie, but very little in the way of skin crawling, classic monster horror.I am also happy to report that this movie IS a success overseas and that means we will indeed be getting more movies in the series. If you like monster movies go give it a watch so we can guarantee that we get a werewolf movie!
