I took in an advanced screening of Rough Night this evening. I will preface by suggesting I had zero intention of seeing this movie. The previews I happened to catch immediately reminded me of Very Bad Things from 1998 and there's definitely precedent for it. Basically, Rough Night has the same premise except a) isn't done as well, b) recycles cinema tropes to excess, and c) doesn't go as far as Very Bad Things did.
A group of friends go out for a pre-wedding party and things go awry when a stripper ends up dead. Unsure which movie I described? I described both Very Bad Things and Rough Night! Shock and twist! Another poorly rehashed and watered down movie! Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't laugh a single time in the theatre tonight. There were plenty of laughs all around me, as the cackling ladies were clearly titillated immensely. Maybe my problem is that this humour isn't new or exciting to me any more. This movie was done better almost twenty years ago and seeing a different, less appealing, less funny group of people tackle it is inevitably going to underwhelm. Not one memorable scene. Not one. The characters were all very unlikeable as well. At least in Very Bad Things, the characters are supposed to be unlikeable. That was one of the draws of the film - it went farther than expected and that was pleasantly surprising. The attempted humour would have been acceptable a couple decades ago, fitting in with movies like Road Trip and say those Hangover movies. But by now I'm tired of it and it's stale. Having women attempt this stale garbage isn't empowering - it's tired and lame.
I suppose if anyone reads this, I might have helped them dodge a bullet. As I was leaving the theatre, I overheard "not as funny as Bridesmaids, but pretty funny". I think both movies sucked. This shit just isn't funny. I won't even write some silly shit like "women aren't funny" because I quite enjoyed Bad Moms. This movie just missed the mark completely because I've seen it so many times in different forms that were funny and more original when I first saw them. I don't often write negative reviews, but this one gets a definite hard pass from me. If you can avoid it, I'm of the opinion that you probably should. If you see it and found it enjoyable, that's great for you. You folks stick with your "tampon humour". I should have known better and hopefully will in future.
