I'm the first to admit that I love shitty movies. To anyone that might be reading these reviews, I've made me love known as recently as The Fast And The Furious. What can I say? I enjoy being able to shut off the old thinking cap and enjoy a couple hours of mindless entertainment once in a while. Something else I thoroughly enjoy is "cheap movie Tuesday" at the local theatres. It makes justifying paying money to see shitty movies so much easier. Now, if only a bag of popcorn wasn't inflated by 1000%, we'd be onto something.
It was suggested that I go see Independence Day: Resurgence for this week's cheap Tuesday but I saw that last week and don't think I'd pay to see it again. I imagine there will be a review for that film showing up here later tonight. I pushed instead for Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates. If you've seen the trailer, you know this isn't going to be winning any awards. Actually, it should probably win an award for "holy fuck, how is Zac Efron in such good shape?!" because holy fuck, how is Zac Efron is such good shape?! The plot is pretty banal in that two losers need to bring nice girls to their sister's wedding and not fuck it up. Apparently the movie is very loosely based on some shit two losers did on Craigslist a few years ago. I didn't hear about it when it was going on, apparently art imitates life now. Whoa, deep.
Zac Efron and Adam Devine star as the two losers while Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza are the two "nice girl" dates. Shocker - they're actually mirror images of the two male leads. Shenanigans ensue, the wedding gets fucked up, but then all four loveable losers team up and save the day... Sort of.
What surprised me was how this didn't really fit into the usual "college frat boy" movie archetype. There wasn't an excessive amount of nudity for starters. I think there was one scene that shows half a pair of tits for about two seconds if memory serves correctly. For a movie with that mentality, there also wasn't an excessive amount of what the church people would call "curse words". Maybe I'm used to it by now, but I don't think any of that stood out in this movie. There were a few prat falls and some silly situations that arose throughout the movie, but otherwise, it was pretty tame. I'm surprised by how tame the movie ended up being. I think other than one scene of (not showing anything whatsoever) girl-on-girl finger blasting, it was pretty ordinary. Also, since I think three of the four leads have been in singing movies (High School whatever and Pitch Something Or Other), it wasn't a stretch to find at least a couple songs performed by the time the end credits rolled.
Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates wasn't awful. I laughed a few times at the silliness. I was pleased that the trailers didn't give away all the funny lines and premises that the movie provided. For the eight bucks that I paid to see it, I feel that I got the mindless entertainment I was striving for. As an added bonus, I was thrown a bit by how hot Anna Kendrick is. If you're looking for a more "college frat boy" film, check out Dirty Grandpa. If you want a milder but so-so funny waste of a couple hours, this is the ticket!
