Rocketman (2019)

rm2019.jpg

Plot

  • The audience is provided an on-screen dramatization a la Broadway based on the life of Elton John.

Pros

  • Music was obviously amazing.

  • Most everyone was a fantastic choice for their roles.

  • Turning songs into plot devices is a challenging thing but this movie succeeds.

Cons

  • Bryce Dallas Howard is the worst.

  • Taron Egerton should sing like himself and less like Elton John.

Final Thoughts

I know the two cons I’ve provided need some explanation. Let’s tackle the latter first. In a film where everyone in the film takes a stab at singing, it seems strange that an actor playing a character that we know to be Elton John is limited by the vocal stylings of the character. Taron Egerton has moments where his true voice comes out and they’re far more exciting than his parodied version of the character. It was a bit off-putting at points but luckily the songs are so good and Egerton does a passable Elton-esque impression. Now onto the part of the movie I do not get for the life of me. Bryce Dallas Howard was cast as Elton’s mother. I feel like her stage direction was “watch Dick Van Dyke for accent inspiration”. It was that bad. Every time she was on-screen, I cringed (both for how deplorable the character was but also the acting). Looking past those two issues, I really enjoyed the film the second time around. The first time I went, I was expecting a biopic framed like Bohemian Rhapsody. Play loose with a few facts and dates to produce a good story. Got it, fine with that. Instead, it’s a full-on Broadway musical. I was not prepared and subsequently did not appreciate it whatsoever. I have no issue with musicals but you don’t just thrust them upon someone. With some preparation, I was able to view it a second time in the right mindset and absolutely enjoyed it. Fans of musicals, the music of Elton John will really appreciate it, I feel.

The Package (2018)

tp2018.jpg

Plot

  • It’s a race against time for a group of young adults to help their friend in dire need.

Pros

  • Fun and silly film.

  • A few very funny lines that are definitely quotable.

Cons

  • For the type of movie that it is, it did the job well. So, no cons!

Final Thoughts

Basically, a dude cuts his peen off and after a snafu, his friends have to find it and get the cooler containing it to the hospital. We get some zany shenanigans, some silly gross-out humour, a bunch of dick jokes, and a fairly decent film as a result. The film was recommended to me because “it’s right up your alley” and boy does that person know me well. I enjoyed it. Highlight line: “You sharted mid-beej?!” Very funny.

John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019)

JW3P.jpg

Plot

  • John Wick is attempting to survive after going against the society of killers.

Pros

  • It’s another fun Keanu Reeves film.

  • The knife fight close to the beginning is amazingly fun.

  • Stunts were well done.

Cons

  • Very little plot. What little was frenetic and didn’t really make sense.

  • Very little plot. So little, it deserves two mentions.

  • Pacing was off. Didn’t leave any time to breathe between action sequences.

Final Thoughts

Okay, so I think it’s safe to say we don’t go see a John Wick film to be moved by the finer plot details. Driven in that direction, this is not. We get a bit of backstory about Wick, someone he owes a life debt to, and the international association of killers that he belongs to. I don’t think any of it matters, does it? Biggest grief is it wasn’t paced like Crank. That movie is fun and frenetic where this one doesn’t carry the same manic energy that translates to enjoyment. It was okay, for sure. But, it’s getting tired and might be worth taking a break.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (2019)

PDP2019.jpg

Plot

  • A young guy goes on a search for his missing father in a world where people and animated creatures (Pokemon?) co-exist.

Pros

  • Nope.

  • The plot twist at the end wan’t actually half bad.

Cons

  • Special effects weren’t very good.

  • Humour missed its mark.

  • Carrying this movie off the power of another film’s raunchy commentary and scripting is weak.

Final Thoughts

I don’t get it. I was never a Pokemon guy. Didn’t play the games, didn’t watch any of the shows. Opportunity came up to sneak peek this film and I try not to say no to free movies. This wasn’t a wise choice, however, The film was lacklustre and the guy beside me giddily cooing at every new animated thing showing up on screen gave me a headache. Having Ryan Reynolds voice a cartoon character after being Deadpool was sure to put asses in seats but I feel it fell flat at best. I was simply occupying a seat until the film ended. I will say that how they tied the film together was decent enough though. So, not a complete waste–just mostly one.

Airheads (1994)

AH1994.jpg

Plot

  • Three stooges prove they’re willing to go the distance to get famous with their rock band.

Pros

  • Soundtrack was decent.

  • Fun cameos throughout.

Cons

  • Thin plot at best.

  • Comedy doesn’t hold up in this day and age.

Final Thoughts

This is one of Patrick’s favourite movies and he talks about it whenever possible. I can’t say the same. I didn’t hate it by any means, but it wasn’t a very good film. The plot and characters weren’t developed enough and as a result it feels maybe too bubbly and silly. I sure liked seeing so many good people show up on-screen though. Fun fact: Brendan Fraser actually sings the tune his band plays. It’s on the soundtrack!
